Birth flowers, originating in Roman times, were used as some of the very first birthday gifts. But why mention them now? August, the month I was born in, bears two flowers; Gladiolus and Poppies. Gladiolus; glamorous, large, showy, and impossible to ignore, provide height and structure to the piece as they do in life. These grand flowers symbolize strength of character, integrity, and remembrance. Poppies; quiet informality, signify pleasure, consolation, wealth, and success. They are also a symbol of remembrance and hope for a peaceful future. Both flowers are mighty in their purpose and meaning thus relayed in the piece. Perseverance, strength, and hope are imperative to foster growth likewise present in the symbolism of these two flowers. Both exist as reminders to push forward and possess connections to the time in which I first blossomed.
